EN 62841-1 TESTS for Electric Motor-Operated Hand-Held Power Tools, Portable Tools, and Lawn and Garden Machinery

The EN 62841-1 standard relates to the safety of electrically operated or magnetically driven devices:

  • Hand-held tools (IEC 62841-2);
  • Portable tools (IEC 62841-3);
  • Lawn and garden equipment (IEC 62841-4).

The categories listed above will henceforth be referred to as "tools" or "machines."

For single-phase a.c. or d.c. tools, the rated voltage does not exceed 250 V, and for three-phase a.c. tools, it does not exceed 480 V.

The rated input does not exceed 3,700 W.

The applicability limits of this standard for battery-operated tools are provided in K.1 and L.1.

This standard addresses hazards encountered by anyone during the normal use of the tools and reasonable misuse that can be anticipated.

The tests conducted under the EN 62841-1 standard are as follows:

  • Programmed voltage/time endurance test.
  • Endurance voltage test.
  • High-voltage burn-out test.
  • Continuity test.
  • Voltage drop test.
  • Insulation resistance test.
  • Leakage current tests (leakage, substitute, touch).
  • Function tests (power, voltage, current, power factor, frequency).
  • Discharge time test.
