EN 60745-1 TESTS FOR HAND-HELD ELECTRICAL TOOLS

GENERAL REQUIREMENTS

The tools shall be designed and constructed to operate safely under normal use and without posing any danger to persons or surroundings, even in cases of reasonably foreseeable misuse. Generally, compliance is checked by applying all the specified tests.

A tool shall comply with the relevant part of IEC 60598-2. However, if there is no applicable section of IEC 60598-2 for a specific tool or lighting group, the nearest section of IEC 60598-2 can be used as a guide for the requirements and tests.

Here, a tool design shall comply with either one or both of the relevant sections of IEC 60598-2, as applicable.

Semi-fixtures should be considered as test tools for testing purposes.

GENERAL TEST CONDITIONS AND VERIFICATION

The tests conducted under this standard are type tests.

Unless otherwise specified, the tests are conducted on a single tool based on all the relevant tests. However, any test that requires tool modification or disassembly after the test may be conducted on a separate sample.

For example, if the tool is designed for different power voltages, additional samples may be necessary. Testing of components may require additional samples.

Cumulative stress from sequential tests performed on electronic circuits should be avoided. Replacing components or using additional samples may be necessary. The number of additional samples should be kept to a minimum in relation to the evaluation of the relevant electronic circuits.

Unless otherwise specified, tests are conducted in the order of conditions. If a test is found to be impractical at any stage during the construction of the tool, the test is not conducted.

Tests are performed using the tool or any moving part placed in the worst possible position that could occur during normal usage.

Tools with controls or switches are tested with the controls as provided.

If the control adjustments are accessible without the use of a tool, this adjustment shall be tested for the validity of whether it can be changed manually or with a tool. If access to the adjustment is not possible without a tool, and if the adjustment is not meant to be changed by the user, this clause is not applicable.

Adequate sealing is considered to prevent the user from altering the settings.

Tests are conducted in a place without drafts, and generally at an ambient temperature of (20 ± 5) °C.

If any part produces heat, and if the temperature-sensitive device is limited or affected by temperature, the room temperature should be maintained at (23 ± 2) °C in case of doubt.

AC tools should be tested at the rated frequency and the specified frequency for AC/DC. If unmarked, they are tested at the most adverse supply conditions.

For tools with more than one nominal voltage, they are tested at the most adverse voltage within the nominal voltage range.

For tools where the supply voltage is a factor multiplied by the nominal voltage, the supply voltage is calculated accordingly.

When alternative attachments are provided by the manufacturer, the tool is tested with the attachments that yield the worst result.

Tools shall be tested with the proper flexible cables unless otherwise specified.

For Class I tools, accessible metal parts, if connected to the ground terminal or contact by an intermediate metal part not separated from live parts, are checked for compliance with the requirements specified for Class II construction.

For Class I tools with accessible non-metallic parts, these parts are checked for compliance with Class II requirements as long as they are not connected to live parts by intermediate metal parts.

For tools in Class I or Class II with components operating under very low voltage, these components are checked for compliance with Class III tool requirements.

While testing electronic circuits, care must be taken to avoid degradation that may affect the results from external sources.

If a heating element cannot be operated without the motor running, it is tested while the motor is running. If the heating element can be operated without the motor running, the test is conducted with the motor running or not, whichever is more adverse. Unless otherwise specified, heating elements included with the tool are connected to a separate power supply.

Tests for parts fulfilling one of the functions mentioned in the relevant sections are conducted according to the requirements of this section.

For other connections, tests are conducted according to the manufacturer's instructions. In the absence of such instructions, the tool is run at a load corresponding to the nominal current or rated input.

When torque is applied, the loading method is selected to avoid additional stress caused by lateral thrust. However, additional loads necessary for the tool's proper operation are considered.

If a brake is used for applying a load, it should be gradually applied to ensure that the test does not affect the startup current. Modifications to output devices for brake connections may be made for loading purposes.

Tools designed to operate at extra-low voltage are tested together with the supplied transformer.
