EN 60335-1 TESTS FOR ELECTRICAL APPLIANCES USED IN HOUSEHOLD AND SIMILAR LOCATIONS

This standard covers the safety requirements for electrical appliances used in households and similar locations, as well as for commercial purposes, operating at a nominal voltage not exceeding 250 V for single-phase and 480 V for others.

Battery-operated appliances and other devices powered by direct current (DC) are within the scope of the EN 60335-1 standard. Examples of appliances for household and similar use include those used for typical domestic services in households and similar locations, and devices typically used by non-expert persons in the following types of domestic services:

  • In shops, workplaces, and other similar work environments,
  • In farmhouses,
  • In hotels, motels, and other residential-type environments used by customers,
  • In bed and breakfast-type settings.

The household and similar environment includes dwellings and related buildings, gardens, etc.

Appliances intended for use by professionals or trained persons in shops, small industrial workplaces, and farms, as well as appliances and machines declared for commercial use by non-professionals, are within the scope of the EN 60335-1 standard.

Devices should be designed to operate safely without posing any danger to persons or their surroundings, even in cases of careless operation that could occur during normal use.

In general, this principle is ensured by fulfilling the relevant rules outlined in this standard, and the conformity status is checked by conducting all relevant tests.

The following tests are performed under the EN 60335-1 standard:

  • Input power and current
  • Leakage current and electrical resistance at operating temperature
  • Conductor control
  • Grounding continuity test
  • Insulation distances, surface leakage path lengths, and clearances across insulation
  • Temporary overvoltages
  • Functional test
  • Electrical resistance
  • Leakage current and electrical resistance
